[newbies] external hard drive

My roomate has a seagate 160 gig external hard drive with usb and 
firewire connections.  We haven't had any luck autodetecting it under 
Windows.  It is HFS+ since he uses mac.  Any chance we can get Linux to 
recognize it like it will recognize usb cameras?
