Seems like some dns servers are just ornery. Not all are pleased to let you
have the hostname you request without a fight. Though it varies quite a bit
based on the distro, I think you'll find sufficient ammo to fight back hence:

A combination of tricks from the above solved my hostname woahs, in any case.
