Wvdial is a great tool that detects your modem.  You have to edit one file after you set it up to put your dial up number and access information in. I used it in Red Hat and Mandrake.

Subject: [newbies] I'm Being Tempted!!!

I just bought two computers and have installed linux on both of them. I love the environment and the free software that came with the operating system, but I can't figure out how to connect to my dial-up internet provider. I'm running the Fedora Core 2. I'm being tempted to install Windows 98 on the new computer instead of linux! Please save me from this sin!

Sincerely,

Jacob D. Durrant
