My solution to the problem on SuSE was to make the interfaces manually activated. It's a bit of a hassle, but it works. You configure this through YaST, but I don't recall exactly where.
RedHat, however, (and by extension Fedora) is working on a program called NetworkManager that will attempt to "do the right thing" with multiple interfaces by activating wired if it can and wireless otherwise. It's goal is to keep you connected whatever that requires. It should be in Fedora Core 3 which is due the first week of November.
