For some reason mandrake is not autoloading the kernel module for you
pcmcia slot. Without this in Linux is unable to detect the slot as a
pcmcia slot. modprobe puts that module into the kernel (at which point
it realizes that you do have a slot) and restarting the service performs
the necessary tasks to have everything reintialize.
