Debian is not for newbies unless you have a strong determination to learn linux. Diving right in like that will either educate you very quickly (good) or alienate you (bad) and leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. It's your choice, of course, but I prefer to help people have a good first experience so they are still willing to learn more. If you want a happy experience w/ Debian try Ubuntu (warty) [1] first. If you want to have a good experience and still be on the cutting-edge try Ubuntu (hoary) [2]. Ubuntu is Debian-based, but still lets you just use your computer without knowing linux ahead of time.
