I am writing to declare (again) my candidacy for the position of UUG
President.

I have been an active member of the Unix Users Group mailing list for
the past two years, and an active member at meetings for this past year.
During this past year in particular, as a member of the presidency, I
have come to better understand the purpose of the UUG, and the
responsibilities of the president.

During this year, I have been in charge of planning the "Don't Fear the
Penguin" meetings that introduced newbies to the basics of Linux, and
have assisted Andrew and Sco++ in planning the installfests. Also, I
have been managing the mailing lists.

I have worked with others in the current presidency to create the new
mailing-list policy so that there is now a uniform way of dealing with
any future problems. In doing this, we had to consider many different
issues including our position as a club under the banner of the CS
Department. We worked to balance the requirements placed upon us by BYU
with the desires of the club members.

As we move forward into the next year, there are some things that I
think we need to improve on:

1) We need to improve our outreach to the newer members of the club.
It is hard to get "up-to-speed" with Linux, and the single "Don't Fear
the Penguin" meeting is not enough. Also, most of our "newbies" in the
club are a bit beyond the level covered in these meetings, but are still
new enough to be overly confused (and in some cases, intimidated) at the
regular club meetings. To make these members feel more a part of the
club, I propose adding an additional meeting to our monthly schedule,
with a focus toward the less-experienced Linux users in our midst. I
will have polls available for people to give their opinion of what they
would like these meetings to cover. If people are interested, this
meeting could be used to cover the basics of topics that would be
covered in meetings later in the month.
As I see it, this additional meeting each month will benefit everyone.
We can increase the involvement in the club of newer members who will
push the club forward to greater heights in the future. More
experienced members will have the opportunity to help these new members
on a more regular basis. Also, the regular meetings can be pushed
forward as we will have more members available who will understand the
basics, and we can thus go to greater depths.

2) We need to continue the tradition of good meetings and excellent
speakers which has been going for the past two years. Our presidencies
thus far have done a great job of selecting speakers and topics for
meetings, and I'd like to both continue and improve upon this tradition.
We have a large array of connections in this club, and many resources to
build upon. Let us look forward and take advantage of these resources
to build up the club.

If you elect me as your president, I will work to make this club the
best it can be. I will work to increase our membership, and increase
the involvement of our current members. I will work to increase the
quality of the time we spend together, and I will look forward to
suggestions from the club members for things I can do better.

Vote TuxGirl (Erin) for UUG President!
