I just recently acquired a 300GB SATA drive and have
intentions to use it in my first attempt at building a file/print server for my
home. I have found some scattered information about using SATA with linux but
nothing very clear (to me at least). The box I want to use was free but it is
pretty old and that’s what I am worried about. It’s running a PIII
555, so I wonder if that is sufficient “horsepower” for what I plan
on doing. The SATA controller card I have supposedly has a Silicon Image chipset
that is supported by libata and I imagine that I could get though patching the
kernel if it is anything like installing the livna repository (I figure they
have names that kinda look alike so it should be basically the same…).
Anyone out there that has some experience with this kind of stuff that could
give me some pointers or heads up before I dive in? You might save me a few
weeks of wasted time. Zak |
