For me it works perfectly,
I've put smtp.mymailserver.com on the server string
and 25 in the "port"
(newpki beta4)

If you want to check if your server (where newpki is installed) can send mail to your mail server,
you can open a terminal window (msdos in windows) and try to establish a connection to your mail server by tapping this:
"telnet smtp.mailserver.com 25"
, on my server if i do this i have that:

pkiserver:~# telnet smtp.mycompany.com 25
Trying 192.168.171.1...
Connected to mailserver.mycompany.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 Hidden banner

so i can from the pkiserver machine call my smtp server on the port 25. (just type "quit" without the quote to exit)

If you can do this think about one thing:
Internet Access Provider's smtp mail servers do not accept relaying, it means that if you aren't connected on the same network the mail server is, it will not forward your mail. So in this case you need to check the configuration of your network (normally, your firewall give his own Internet address for a communication outgoing his private lan network).

If you have such a thing:

pkiserver:~# telnet smtp.celsecat.com 25
Trying 194.3.171.1...

and stay blocked, you have a limitation in your firewall, just allow communications outgoing from your network to any machine on port 25.

hope you had already solved this problem.
