FBI Investigates Break-in At ID Card Contractor
Posted: 25 Sep 2008 10:07 PM PDT
Thank to Ruthr.
Two laptop computers and other equipment were taken from a federal center in
New
Haven that processes applications for a program that provides identification
cards to
workers with access to seaports, federal officials said Wednesday.
Authorities say the computers, a camera and biometrics collection equipment
were taken
from the Grand Avenue site over the weekend.
The FBI is assessing whether there was a threat to national security, said
spokesman
Edward Garlick.
Christopher White, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration,
said the
stolen laptops do not pose a security risk. He says data is wiped clean daily
and is
encrypted, so it's not accessible to thieves.
Lockheed Martin, the contractor at the center, collects the data and submits it
to TSA for
background checks to make sure applicants do not pose a threat.
The theft was criticized by House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie
Thompson, D-Miss.
"Security of personal data is paramount to our national security.

Israel On High Alert For Mass-casualty Terror Attack
Posted: 25 Sep 2008 05:07 PM PDT

Israel's military has been placed on high alert following an airline bomb
scare and reports
of other threats.
Officials said the intelligence community has warned of an imminent attack by
either Al
Qaida or Hizbullah against Israel. They said the Islamic insurgency could be
planning the
hijacking of an Israeli passenger jet that would then be crashed into an
Israeli residential
area.
"There is an assessment that something very bad will take place over the
next few weeks,
perhaps over the Jewish holidays," an official said.
On Sept. 24, the Israeli military was ordered on high alert following a bomb
scare involving
an El Al passenger jet. Security officials received information that a bomb had
been placed
on plane scheduled to arrive at Ben-Gurion International Airport from Paris
that evening.

Emergency Preparedness Pt. 1 - Creating A 72 Hour Kit
Posted: 25 Sep 2008 02:59 PM PDT
The 72-Hour Emergency Kit should be individually tailored to meet the basic
survival
needs of your family for three days to a week. Most families prefer to store
their
emergency supplies in one location that is relatively safe, yet easily
accessible if
evacuation is required. Items may be stored in a 32-gallon trash can, suitcase,
duffle bag,
backpack, footlocker, or individual pack.

Pentagon Says Pakistan Fired on U.S. Aircraft
Posted: 25 Sep 2008 10:57 AM PDT

Pakistani troops fired on U.S. helicopters patrolling eastern Afganistan
Thursday, the
Pentagon said, adding that it expects an explanation from Pakistani officials.
Two American OH-58 reconnaissance helicopters, known as Kiowas, were on a
routine
afternoon patrol in the eastern province of Khost when they received small arms
fire from
a Pakistani border post, said Tech Sgt. Kevin Wallace, a U.S. military
spokesman. There
was no damage to aircraft or crew, officials said.
"They did not cross the border and they did not fire back," Wallace
said.
The Pakistani military disputed that assertion, saying its troops fired warning
shots when
the two helicopters crossed over the border — and that the U.S. helicopters
fired back.
"When the helicopters passed over our border post and were well within
Paskitani territory,
own security forces fires anticipatory warning shots. On this, the helicopters
returned fire
and flew back," a Pakistani military statement said.

Pakistan On "Red Alert"
Posted: 25 Sep 2008 09:35 AM PDT

Pakistan has gone to Red Alert status. The crisis deepens with word that
additional
explosive-laden trucks, similar to the one used earlier this week in the
Marriott hotel
bombing, may have entered Islamabad. There are additional reports of a number
of al
Qaeda plans "in the pipeline to attack locations across Pakistan to
destabilize the country."
>From CBS News
Pakistan's security officials put all of the country's airports on
"red alert" Thursday after
intelligence warnings of a suicide attack.
"We had very credible information of a suicide attempt in Islamabad which
prompted this
step," a senior security official stated. The official spoke on condition
of anonymity
because he was not authorized to address the matter.
At the country's largest airport, in the capital city of Islamabad, only
passengers with valid
tickets were allowed to enter the airport until Thursday afternoon. A
government official
said the emergency security measures were under constant review.
The security official said the heightened security was prompted by information
gained
through the interrogation of a recently arrested militant suspect, but he
declined to
identify the suspect or say when or where the person was taken into custody.

A Western defense official in Islamabad told Bokhari there were reports of a
number of al
Qaeda plans "in the pipeline to attack locations across Pakistan to
destabilize the country."
According to a report Wednesday in Pakistan's Daily Times newspaper,
intelligence
agencies informed the police that three explosives-laden trucks had entered the
capital
city - one of them known to have been destroyed in the Marriott Hotel attack
last
Saturday.
