Greeks slam Milosevic's delivery to The Hague

THE EXTRADITION of Slobodan Milosevic was widely
condemned in Greece by both politicians and the media.
Many Greeks criticised the United States and its
allies for "blackmailing" Serbia. "Milosevic in the
hands of murderers," read the banner front-page
headline of Rizospastis, the Communist party
newspaper. "For a fistful of dollars," read the
headline in the conservative broadsheet Kathimerini.

Politicians and commentators criticised the move for
coming at a time when the Yugoslav constitutional
court had ruled against extradition and for being
carried out without the prior knowledge of Yugoslav
President Vojislav Kostunica. "Slobodan Milosevic may
be a criminal, but the way in which he was surrendered
to The Hague tribunal is equally criminal," said the
liberal Athens daily Eleftherotypia. "The delivery of
Milosevic occurred through blackmail,... in exchange, literally, for a
handful of dollars," of financial assistance towards the reconstruction
of Yugoslavia. Former conservative premier Costas Mitsotakis, said the
extradition was "not an act of justice" and was carried out "in
violation of law and order". Mitsotakis accused the US and Europe of
making "serious mistakes" which will impact negatively on the situation
in Yugoslavia. Former Socialist foreign minister Carolos Papoulias
warned that the extradition could fuel a drawn-out political crisis in
Yugoslavia.
