PROSECUTOR: MILOSEVIC TO FACE MORE CHARGES
Zagreb (Reuters) - The deputy chief prosecutor of the Hague-based war crimes
tribunal said on Friday he was sure ousted Yugoslav dictator Slobodan
Milosevic (news - web sites) would be convicted when he came to trial.
Asked by reporters what chance Milosevic had of walking free, Graham Blewitt
replied:
``You are asking a prosecutor -- none.''
Milosevic is charged with crimes against humanity for the ethnic cleansing
drive against Albanians in Kosovo in 1999.
But Blewitt said the prosecution was planning to go further and indict him
also for crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia.
``It is our intention to bring out additional indictments against
Milosevic...(and) to seek to amend what would then be the three indictments,
to join them together so we can have one trial -- one trial of Slobodan
Milosevic for the crimes in Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia,'' Blewitt said
However, additional indictments were not likely to be issued before the end
of this summer, he added.
``It will be one of the most complicated and difficult trials in the history
of criminal justice,'' he told reporters, one day after Belgrade authorities
extradited Milosevic to the tribunal.
Blewitt told a media forum here the next big task was the apprehension and
handover of other key war crimes suspects indicted by the tribunal,
including Bosnian Serb wartime leaders Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic,
both believed to be hiding in Bosnia.
``We hope this is going to signal further cooperation,'' he said, referring
to the action required by the Serb entity within Bosnia to hand over its own
suspects.
