WILL AMERICA DESTROY ITSELF OR WILL IT BE BORN AGAIN ? Zvonimir Trajkovic In these last few days since the horrible terrorist attack, America has survived its hardest time since WWII. Innocent casualties, hurt pride, and a fiasco from our all-mighty intelligence services have shocked this land like never before. Turbulence in the finance and business industries is also expected and this will make it even worse. America is confused, humiliated and the only response one can hear is: REVENGE !!! The drumbeats of war and the military machines have been set in motion bringing threats and ultimatums. Is there anything that can stop it? Have all Americans, because of this hopeless state, lost the sense and capability for clear thinking, and wise and far- reaching decision-making? Is there any voice of reason warning them not to make the detrimental mistakes? Stop. Please Stop. Stop the mania of revenge, first of all, because of the common world in which we all live together. Terrorism is a world problem and it won't be solved with the mere use of brute force. It will always come back, just like a boomerang. America's strength and might comes from not only its armies but also its politics. And the main reason for this horrible terrorism is in the flawed American political policy -the arrogant politics of force and bombardment as well as different kinds of political pressures such as embargoes and sanctions rewarded contra strikes. That eight-year-old political policy of double standards and the enforcement of a "New World order" and globalisation are the number one reason for the agony in America today. Confused American citizens ask often: "Why do they all hate us so much?" Americans would be wise to ask their president to answer that question. I believe that the American political situation has made terrorist centers focused in the Middle East. The support for Israel ; the unwarranted bombardment of Iraq while Iraqi children died from hunger caused by sanctions ; the bombing of Libya and Jordan with the sole explanation of destroying terrorist camps. Couldn't American politicians see that the use of force, humiliation and sanctions would result in revenge at any cost? Considering the fact that these groups and countries couldn't offer any military resistance, they decided to try it with the most extreme of suicidal terrorism. The second flaw in the American political policy is its cooperation with these same terrorist groups during the wars between Russia and Afghanistan , in Chechnya, and helping destabilize Yugoslavia. In one way, Osama Bin Laden was created by American secret services because they needed him to organize Muslim fundamentalists to fight the army of the former USSR. The CIA and many other secret services cooperated very intensively with the Jihad-warriors during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia (Croatia and Bosnia). Together, they drove ethnic Serbs out of Croatia and many parts of Bosnia. The directed bogus massacre on the Sarajevo`s market Markale was created as a reason for sanctions against Serbia and for the bombing campaign against Serbs in Republic of Srpska. And today, it is not clear if the infamous Osama Bin Laden has a Bosnian passport; and if so, whether he got it personally from Bosnia's Muslim leader Alija Izetbegovic. Cooperation with terrorist groups continued making a new crises in Serbia (Kosovo). The American political practice of double standards didn't want to recognize terrorists in these groups. They were called "liberation army" (KLA). . American politics went so far that Serbia and its leadership was declared guilty because they dared to defend their own country. That had to be punished with another bombing campaign. Meanwhile many American and European politicians won't fight against terrorism in Macedonia. Instead they pressure Macedonians to accept the terrorists' blackmails. There is no way that the same gentlemen would deal with such problems in their own countries. America led a real media "war" with the help of some European governments and CNN broadcasted that live. American people got the opportunity to see live in their comfortable arm-chairs the bombing of Iraq, Serbs in Bosnia , 78 days of bombing Yugoslavia (Serbia and Monte Negro) with a lot of lies about Serbs with comments about fairness and blamelessness on the part of America. The trains which were bombed in Yugoslavia, the civilians and workers of Serbian Television (RTS) which were killed, were only "collateral damage". Because of these inaccurate portrayal of events, the American people have been misguided and wonder today: "Well ,why does everybody hate us ?" Nobody necessarily hates the residents of the United States. However, if the American media has misinformed you and if the American government has misguided you then perhaps you should think again about the 'American way of life'. Bananas can't grow everywhere on this planet just as the American model of state can not be practiced everywhere. Even if it was ideal it wouldn't often be acceptable for many nations. I don't think we have to mention that every normal human being feels sorry for the innocent victims of this senseless terror act. America stays at the crossroads. Either America will peacefully and without consideration of the pressures wanting revenge, make a serious change to its political thinking or it will continue to sink deeper and deeper. In the next few months we shall see if America is about to be born again or to ruin itself. Hopefully there will be a political rejuvenation which will show that one superpower like America accepts, without playing world police, other nations and states developing in different ways. And hopefully America will not show its arrogant politics of force again and will not like the world policeman share it's "justice" of double standards. If the political turnaround happens, the new strong and beautiful America will be born again as a result of this tragedy. If it doesn't happen and if the "war drumbeats" with revenges and bombings continues, America will go down. Nobody can foresee the consequences of retaliations and the final result of such a war campaign. Will that turn into a new NATO crusader war or perhaps into a new Vietnam? On the other hand, with the use of force we'll get even more fanatics ready for more terrorist acts. Several new Bin Ladens could be born. Especially dangerous is the fact that the attack on the WTC showed how so few terrorists could attack any state and kill so many people and destroy so much. They might try to do the same in another part of America. Already tomorrow you could see some suicide kamikaze targeting large events with 30.000-40.000 people or similar. In the words of the experts, the explosion of the Boeing 767 with 45 t Kerosene is equal to the one of 150 t TNT and it has strength of a tactical nuclear bomb. Does it mean that the civil air companies will have problems because the people get scared from what happened ? What about developing the giant planes with 500-600 seats and what a flying bombs they could be ? Will America together with some European alliance countries turn intoa police state in which everything must be controlled and the freedom of today's American way of life doesn't exist? Some TV-stations like CNN made poor judgement in broadcasting all details about this terror attack because the publicity means a lot to the terrorists and helps them to find new fanatics ready to sacrifice their lives for the "holy" thing. In conclusion, stop your war dreams. War is for certain, the wrong way to fight terrorism. Instead, invest in Afghanistan and other third world countries whose people are starving. Don't finance their cruise missiles or anti-missile cosmic shields. Give those states at least one part of the money back that your multinational companies and bank organizations have grabbed. Let other nations live in dignity too. Don't protect Albanian terrorism only because it is "momentarily useful for your national interests." Every terrorism is basically the same and this Albanian terrorism is not different and can over night show its real face. American politics is on the move and it will show us if America is going to destroy itself or will it be born again. On the contrary, good bye America.
