CHICAGO -- Responding to requests from local
Muslim and Arab-American organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union of
Illinois on Wednesday opened a telephone hot line for those who believe they
have been unfairly targeted by law enforcement officials because of their
religion or ethnicity.
"While these are the gravest of times, we must ensure that our government adheres to our most basic principles and affords fairness and non-discriminatory treatment to persons in every community," Colleen K. Connell, executive director of the ACLU of Illinois, said in a statement.
The ACLU also has compiled a constitutional rights brochure that they are distributing to local Muslim and Arab-American organizations.
People with complaints that police or airline security officials have violated their rights should call the ACLU at 312-201-9740, spokesman Ed Yohnka said.
Even before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, ACLU officials estimated that up to 90 percent of all complaints about airport security were made by people of Middle Eastern descent.
