Croatia Might Charge Partisans With War Crimes

ZAGREB, Sep 25, 2001 -- (dpa) The Croatian government
is considering indicting partisans who fought in the
Second World War under Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito
for war crimes, the HINA state news agency reported
Tuesday.

The agency quoted a government official, who insisted
on anonymity, as saying that so far only the crimes of
the Ustashe, the forces of the Nazi puppet state
during the war, "had been punished".

In Tito's Yugoslavia the crimes of partisans were
considered "justified crimes in the name of the
(communist) ideology", the news agency said.

The government official also said that it had in mind
crimes committed by Tito's partisans against civilians
and prisoners of war in May 1945.
