October 7, 2001 -- Two years ago, the man who may be Osama bin Laden's
"CFO" was securely behind bars in India.

But Sheik Syed - believed to have been the money man behind the Sept. 11
terror attacks - was set free by Indian authorities, in a deal forced by
a forbodingly similar hijacking, according to sources quoted by CNN.

Syed is described as a key figure in handling bin Laden's
multimillion-dollar terror budget.

The Indian government had jailed him because he also played a key role
in an Islamic militant group fighting for independence in that country's
disputed northern province of Kashmir.

But in December 1999, Indian Airlines Flight 814 was hijacked by
terrorists wielding knives.

The terrorists slit the throat of one of the 178 passengers, forcing
pilots to open the cockpit door. What followed was a terrifying,
eight-day hostage situation, culminating in the Indian government's
decision to free Syed and two other Islamic militants to ensure the
passengers' safety.

Investigators now believe Syed to be the man who sent more than $100,000
from Pakistan to Mohamed Atta, believed to be the leader of the 19
hijackers involved in last month's terror attacks..
