Police said the man was mentally disturbed

An armed man broke into the Canadian embassy in the Yugoslav capital,
Belgrade, and briefly held hostages before turning himself in. The man,
reported to be in his mid-20s, jumped over the embassy's fence and
entered the building around 1300 (1100 GMT).

The man was very upset and mentally disturbed

He surrendered shortly afterwards and was led away by police.

The man, who has not been identified, threatened to commit suicide if he
was not allowed to live in Canada.

Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic said: "This had nothing to do
with terrorism or with Canada as a state. The man was very upset and
mentally disturbed, who thought this would be a way to be granted
asylum."

No threat

Police said the man was armed with a gun.

"There was no problem. He did not threaten anyone except himself," a
police source told the Reuters news agency.

Reporters saw a man escorted from the embassy in handcuffs and taken
into a police jeep.

Last week the US embassy in Belgrade received a bomb threat which turned
out to be false.

Canada, the US and other Nato countries re-established diplomatic ties
with Yugoslavia recently after former President Slobodan Milosevic was
toppled last year.
