AROUND 10,000 SERBS PROTEST IN KOSOVSKA MITROVICA. Almost 10,000 Serbs
gathered in northern Kosovska Mitrovica on April 17 continuing their
protest over the arrest of Slavoljub Jovic, one of "bridge guards", an
armed Serb vigilante-style group who patrol the Ibar river which
separates the town into Serbian and Albanian halves.

Like the previous eight protests, this one was also held under the
slogan "Stop Persecution and Arrests of Serbs", the protesters demanding
the release of Slavoljub Jovic, Stevan Zigic and other Serbs held in
Kosovo prisons.

In the end, the protesters walked to the UN police station in northern
Mitrovica and threw eggs at the building.

The huge turnout stemmed from the fact that Coordinating Center for
Kosovo Chief Nebojsa Covic was to visit the crisis-struck town.

Covic, however, failed to attend the Serb protest, as he was in Pristina
at the time, discussing the crisis in Mitrovica with UNMIK Chief Michael
Steiner.
