Suspected suicide bomb attack in Israel leaves at least 5 dead

At least five people have been killed in an explosion on a bus in
the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. Police said the blast, which also left
more than 40 people injured, appeared to have been the work of a
Palestinian suicide bomber. The explosion happened in one of Tel
Aviv's busiest shopping districts. Israeli media reports said the
Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad had claimed responsibility
for the attack. Earlier the same group said it carried out another
suicide bombing which killed an Israeli policeman in northern Israel
on Wednesday. The Palestinian leadership has meanwhile responded by
condemning the bombing while Israel accused Palestinian security
forces of doing nothing to stop such attacks.

Mutiny in the Ivory coast kills minister and former ruler

The interior minister and the former military ruler have reportedly
been killed during an uprising by soldiers in the Ivory Coast.
The Ivorian ministry of defence said ex-military leader, General
Robert Guei, was found dead in the main commercial city, Abidjan,
just hours after he was accused of being behind a troop mutiny.
The death of Interior Minister Emile Boga has also been confirmed by
diplomatic sources. Heavy fighting broke out in Abidjan before dawn
with at least ten people being killed. There has been heavy fighting
in at least two other main towns. The shooting broke out as
President Laurent Gbagbo was in Rome. There, his aides said the
situation was under control and there had been no attempt to seize
   power by force.

Bush says prepared to take action against Iraq without UN support

U.S. President George W. Bush has said he will ask the U.S. Congress
to endorse a possible attack against Iraq if needed and has warned
the United Nations Security Council to deal with Iraq or Washington
will. Bush said that a proposed resolution he will send to Congress
later will seek congressional endorsement of the use of military
   force against Baghdad if needed.

Iraq welcomes German offer to take part in UN arms inspections

The Iraqi government has called on the United Nations to accept an
offer from Germany's Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder for German experts
to take part in UN weapons inspections in Iraq. On Tuesday,
Schroeder gave UN Secretary General Kofi Annan credit for convincing
Baghdad to allow the return of arms inspectors and proposed German
experts for the inspection teams. Schroeder offered the services of
German experts in biological and chemical weapons and missile
technology, as well as the use of laboratory facilities. The German
leader's comments followed Baghdad's announcement that it would
allow the unconditional return of UN weapons inspectors, who were
pulled out of the country in 1998.

EU to cut financial assistance to Kosovo

European External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten has hailed
Kosovo as a success as he announced a reduction in EU's financial
assistance to the UN-administered Yugoslav province. The foreign
policy commissioner said the budget for Kosovo in 2003 would be 50
million euros, down from 320 million euros in 2001. Since the war
ended in 1999, the EU has given one billion euros towards the
reconstruction of the war-torn province, although more remains to be
   done.

Germany bans 16 groups linked to Turkish 'Caliph'

Germany has banned 16 organisations accused of links to a Cologne-
based group outlawed under security legislation in December. The
Interior Ministry said police had carried out around 100 raids
across Germany searching apartments and confiscating documents and
funds connected to the groups. Two other groups with suspected links
to the Cologne based Caliphat group set up in Germany in 1984, are
still being investigated. The declared aim of the caliphat is the
overthrow of Turkey's secular regime and its replacement by a
fundamentalist Islamic state. The German authorities also said the
   movement was anti-democratic and anti-semitic.

German police raid suspected child sex rings

Police in western Germany have searched more than 160 homes in a
series of swoops on suspected paedophile circles, seizing computers
and other materials. According to porsecutors there were no arrests.
The suspects are thought to have downloaded child pornography videos
onto their computer using credit card payments. Officials said some
may also have abused children themselves in order to gain access to
a paedophile ring. Officials said they were tipped off by US
authorities after two suspected child pornography video dealers from
Braunschweig in central Germany, left their credit card details on a
   US Internet server.
