Gazprom Gives Serbia 60 Days

Reuters BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- Gazprom gave Serbia 60 days to propose
how to repay a $255 million debt for gas purchased during the rule of
Slobodan Milosevic, an official of Serbia's oil monopoly said Friday.

Naftna Industrija Srbije general manager Dimitrije Vukcevic said the
debt was accumulated from 1994 to 2000, and since then all gas purchases
had been paid for promptly, Tanjug news agency reported.

Milosevic was ousted in 2000. Until Dec. 1, Gazprom, Serbia's sole gas
supplier under a deal made between Belgrade and Moscow during
Milosevic's tenure as president of the country, will continue supplying
gas to Serbia, Vukcevic said.

Gazprom has threatened several times to cut supplies because of the
debt. Gazprom will supply 165 million cubic meters of gas in October and
236 million in November, but at new higher prices, Vukcevic, who just
returned from a three-day trip to Russia for negotiations with the
Russian partner, told reporters.

Prices had gone up by $11 and $12 per 1,000 cubic meters for October and
November, respectively, because of the new trends on the world oil
market, the manager said.

He said Gazprom had expressed interest in purchasing stakes in some Serb
companies in exchange for the debt, mentioning the fertilizer plant in
Pancevo near Belgrade and a methanol plant in Kikinda, northern Serbia.
NIS will ask for an 11 percent increase in the domestic price to make up
for the higher purchase price, Vukcevic said.
