The Serbian government has sacked the Managing Director of the state owned telecoms group, PTT Srbija, Srdjan Blagojevic after he attempted to increase the company's stake in the the local GSM network operator, Mobtel. "He has overstepped his authority," Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic told state television. The government has been in dispute with the BK group which currently owns 51% of the GSM network operator following an agreement signed during the rule of Slobodan Milosevic. The sales has been in dispute as the Serbian government has long argued that the BK group, owned by business tycoon Bogoljub Karic had not paid the agreed US$67 million for the majority stake. Last week, BK group said that it had secured an agreement to "cede" 6% of its holding to PTT Srbija, reducing its stake to 45 percent from 51 percent. However, the government says that no agreement has been reached, and that Blagojevic had overstepped his authority to make such an agreement. The government has appointed Jovanka Knezevic as the acting general manager. He was the head of business and financial relations at PTT Srbija. PTT Srbija also holds 80% of cell phone and land line operator Telekom Srbija, with the rest held by Greece's OTE. Mobtel currently has around 1.5 million subscribers. Incidentally, the company has just announced a tender for the supply of GSM boosters. The Bids must be submitted at the registry office of Telekom Srbija by the 6th October. |
