Prosecutor: Bosnia Serb Suspect Karadzic in Belgrade Wed February 11, 2004 07:21 AM ET

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic is living in Belgrade, U.N. war crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte said Wednesday, adding that her office's relations with Serbia had broken down as a result.

"I received just last week information from a credible source that even Karadzic is now in Belgrade. So Belgrade is now a safe haven for our fugitives ... Karadzic is now residing in Belgrade," she told reporters.

"We must say that at this time cooperation is frozen," Del Ponte added.

"We have around 15 fugitives who are in Serbia," she said, referring to a group of indicted war crimes suspects wanted by the Hague war crimes tribunal.

Del Ponte has already said wanted Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic is in Serbia.

"So we have now both our most high level (people) responsible for the crimes committed, Mladic and Karadzic," in Serbia, she said.

The Hague tribunal's indictment against Mladic, Bosnian Serb military chief during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, accuses him of genocide and other crimes.

Karadzic is alleged to be responsible for the Srebrenica massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in 1995. The two are the most prominent Hague indictees still free.
