Ukrainian opposition protests government bid to join
EU, NATO
KIEV - Several thousand opposition activists took to
the streets in downtown Kiev Thursday to protest
against the government's plans to join NATO and the
European Union.
About a thousand activists from the Progressive
Socialist Party, a staunch opponent of Ukraine's
accession to the North Atlantic alliance, rallied on
Independence Square in the early morning, carrying
2,500 lit candles in commemoration of the civilians
killed in NATO's 1999 operation in Yugoslavia. They
called for the reintegration of the former Soviet
republic with Russia and Belarus.
Ukrainian ultranationalist party Bratstvo also staged
a rally Thursday against the government's bid for EU
and NATO membership. Some 300 Bratstvo activists
gathered outside the presidential staff headquarters
with signs proclaiming, "Blair, Go Home!"
The protests were held against the backdrop of a
Ukraine-EU summit, the first one since the "Orange
Revolution" a year ago that had swept pro-Western
Viktor Yushchenko into power.
At the Kiev summit, British Prime Minister Tony Blair
- whose country currently holds the rotating EU
presidency - and leaders of other EU nations granted
Ukraine market economy status and backed its bid to
join the World Trade Organization.
The recognition of Ukraine as a free market economy is
a major achievement for President Yushchenko, bringing
him a step closer to Brussels.

Thousands Gather on Kiev Main Square to Protest NATO
Entry
About 4,000 Ukrainians from different cities gathered
on Kiev's Independence Square — the main site of last
year's Orange revolution — early on Dec. 1 to protest
against NATO entry, sought by President Yushchenko,
From-UA news agency reported.
The protest rally was organized by an opposition
Progressive Socialist Party ahead of the EU-Ukraine
summit, due to open in Kiev on Thursday. Its leader
Natalia Vitrenko said that up to 30,000 were to arrive
in Kiev from other parts of the country but police did
not let them enter the capital.
Addressing her supporters, Vitrenko reminded that 14
years ago Ukraine approved the declaration on the
country's sovereignty that bans joining such blocs as
NATO. She also said that only 2,5 per cent of
Ukrainians support Yushchenko's initiative.
Meanwhile, officials in Kiev are getting ready for the
summit marking the first anniversary of the Orange
Revolution. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who
currently holds the rotating EU presidency, will
arrive in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday.
At the meeting, Kiev is hoping for high marks on an
action plan that the EU signed with Ukraine after the
pro-Western Yushchenko assumed power in late January
following the revolution.
The plan lays out a series of benefits — including
trade agreements — that Brussels intends to offer the
country as part of the EU's so-called Neighborhood
Policy with states around its borders.
