LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Madam,
If you are going to reprint articles from the mainstream US press on
Venezuela it is important that these be balanced by similar propaganda
from the elected government side. The USA has never forgiven Hugo
Chavez for winning 7 elections in a row, surviving a CIA backed coup,
forming a democratic administration and implementing the pre-election
promises he made. This may be an anathema for US politicians, their oil
industry interests and their friends in the corporate US media - but it
is democracy. It is also hugely popular with the electorate. US
politicians should try it sometime.
The US knows that its proposed puppets in Venezuela have no chance in
the forthcoming election and, rather than be annihilated at the polls,
the Bush spin doctors have persuaded them to withdraw. That is the real
story. What you printed yesterday is no more than propaganda issued by
the Bush spin machine. We, the readers of the Irish Times, expect more
of you.
I have no doubt that this letter, because it criticises your decision
making, will never get to print. But I know that you know that I am
right and that my views are widely shared by Irish people.
