Germany opposes Russian stance on Kosovo (RSCG)

Germany has opposed the Russian stance according to which the solution for Kosovo must be based on universal principles that might be applied to similar conflicts in the territory of the former Soviet Union. The Foreign Ministry in Berlin has stated that German authorities view Kosovo as a unique case created after the collapse of Yugoslavia, ethnic cleansing and conflict in 1999. The Berlin authorities do not state what status Kosovo should have, except that they underline that a solution must strengthen regional stability and multiethnic character of the society in the province. Russian President Vladimir Putin has assessed that claims on Kosovo as a unique case represent an excuse for those who want to circumvent the international law.
