Barroso calls for compromise, Sejdiu says independence is a real option

Prishtina, February 17, 2006 (KosovaLive) - The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso called today Prishtina and Belgrade to be ready for generous compromises and for constructive attitude during the upcoming status talks, whereas Kosova’s President Fatmir Sejdiu said that independence is a real option and it is the will of Kosova’s people.

Barroso and Rehn stopped yesterday in Pristina, as part a tour to the countries of the Western Balkans. They met with Kosova’s President Fatmir Sejdiu, Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi, and with Kosova with the Negotiations Team in its full composition. Their meeting was focused on the status process and the steps that need to be undertaken for EU integration.

Barroso said that 2006 is a challenging year for Kosova and whatever the status talks outcome is, Kosova’s future belongs to Europe. “I was yesterday in Belgrade and I have encouraged the officials there for constructive attitude during the status talks. I also call Pristina the same. The both sides have their responsibilities and dare not fail. The time for compromise has come and the compromises should be made from both sides,” Barroso said.

Barroso also stressed that EC, and the entire EU are committed for a sustainable solution for Kosova. “Only a democratic and multi–ethnic Kosova, respecting the rule of law will be acceptable to the international community,” he added.

He said that Kosova should fulfill the standards, which are very important for its approximation with EU. He said that Kosova should work more on decentralization, protection of minorities, returns, inclusion of all communities, participation in the Government in all levels, protection of cultural and religious heritage.

President Barroso called on the Kosova Serb community to return to Kosova institutions. “On behalf of EU I have called them to return to Kosova politics, play an active role and contribute to shaping a multi ethnic democratic Kosova.”

While, President Sejdiu said that the stance of the Kosova institutions and the will of the people for freedom and independence. “In this direction, we are encouraged by the fact that the more and more international support is given to Kosova’s independence as a real option.

Sejdiu said that Kosova is going well prepared to Vienna to discuss on decentralization with Belgrade. He said that Kosovar side would provide guarantees and support for all ethnic communities in order Kosovars to have a common and bright future. Barroso and Rehn also met with Kosova Serb representatives. It is reported that the Serb representatives have expressed their concern that the talks that will start on Monday may trigger tensions and may cause exodus of Serbs from Kosova.
