SERBIA WILL LOSE KOSOVO
The newspaper reruns an interview that SRSG Soren Jessen Petersen gave to Vienna daily Der Standard. The following are some excerpts of it. Der Standard: How do you judge the false news about the arrestment of Ratko Mladic, who is accused of war crimes? Jessen Petersen: It may be they have started a survey to measure peoples pulse. Maybe they have done this to prepare his arrestment. Der Standard: Was this news connected to the starting of the talk on Kosovos status in Vienna? Jessen Petersen: The moment is not connected to this issue, but everything is in a way interconnected since Serbia is facing with a triple pressure. It will lose Kosovo and Montenegro may walk away. The developments to get closer to the EU and partnership for peace with NATO are hostages of Karadjics and Mladics arrestments.[ ] Der Standard: There are voices that say that Kosovos independence may empower radical forces in Serbia. Jessen Petersen: When the Euro-Atlantic perspective would be a realistic possibility for the Serbs and Albanians as well, borders will fall down on then. This anachronism regarding borders would not have then the weight it has now. In mid-term aspect, that would create shocks. But it the mid and long run, it will just make Serbia and the region democratic. Der Standard: Would it not be better if the international community said that Kosovo will be independent? Jessen Petersen: I did not say that Kosovo will be independent. I said that Serbia will lose Kosovo. It is important for anyone to understand that 90% of the Kosovo population know what they want. Also, this majority should know that there are minorities, 10%, and a society that does not take into consideration the concerns of 10% of population can never function. |
