Russian Communists Rename St. Petersburg Street After
Milosevic
A group of Russian communists has changed the plates
on a St. Petersburg street for "Slobodan Milosevic
Street", news agencies said Tuesday.
Activists of the St. Petersburg Communists regional
movement removed 15 street name plates from houses on
Belgradskaya Street. The new plates read "Slobodan
Milosevic Street" and feature the communist movement
emblem, the red USSR flag and a portrait of the late
Yugoslavian leader.
Neither law enforcement agencies nor passers-by
interfered with the action, which was carried out
during the night.
"Passers-by and residents of Belgradskaya street
reacted quite sympathetically, they either supported
our initiative or remained neutral," the press service
for the St. Petersburg Communists said.
The activists do not expect the new street name to
last long, but say they were happy to be able to
express their solidarity with Milosevic, who died in a
UN prison last week.
