Is U.S. repeating mistake in Kosovo?
This story ran on nwitimes.com on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 12:35 AM CDT
Despite the 500 years of Ottoman rule, Kosovo has become a quagmire of economic, politically social instability in the Balkans with no promise of a reasonable solution. Various lobbyists in Washington, D.C., have spent hordes of money, hoping to win political favor with U.S. congressmen and senators by proclaiming Kosovo as an independent Muslim province of neighboring Albania.Have we forgotten the distant past, when Western Europe was in the throes of a pincer movement, as the Moors of Spain invaded the country in the 7th century and ruled for 700 years? History tells us the Serbs were the true allies of the Western powers in both world wars until the self-proclaimed Marshal Broz Tito came to rule over former Yugoslavia.
General Drazha Mihailovich -- his rival, the first nationalist guerrilla leader in World War II, who fought against the Nazis and the communists during the entire war -- was betrayed by the Americans and British, even though his brave men helped save some 500 U.S. war pilots at great personal risk to themselves and their families. Mihailovich was placed before a firing squad after a kangaroo court trial by the communists. Are we apt to make a similar mistake by turning Kosovo into an Albanian province? Heaven forbid.Ned J.
