Putin's envoy criticizes Ahtisaari Kosovo plan

MOSCOW - Russian president's representative for
relations with the EU said on Wednesday that a Kosovo
plan of U.N. mediator Martti Ahtisaari does not meet
interests of the sides in its present shape.

Russia is not going to participate "in an experiment
to divide a sovereign state against its will," Sergei
Yastrzhembsky said. "Any formula for Kosovo settlement
must be fair for both sides," he believes.

"There can be no successful decision if it affects the
interests of one side and satisfies the other,"
Yastrzhembsky emphasized.

"Such a decision plants a time bomb for new
conflicts," he added. "Ahtisaari's plan in its present
state fails to meet these criteria, it does not give a
formula that would be equally suitable or unsuitable,
as it is a compromise for both sides," he stressed.

"The international community has all necessary
possibilities, and more important - time, to continue
work and search for a more suitable compromise
formula," Yastrzhembsky believes.
