UN resolution on Kosovo will need Serbian agreement: Russia

AFP - Monday, July 9BISHKEK (AFP) - - Moscow will only back a United Nations
Security Council resolution on Kosovo if Serbia also approves it, Russia's
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned Monday.

While avoiding any explicit reference to Russia's power of veto, Lavrov said:
"Any decision on Kosovo will only be possible on the basis of an agreement of
the two parties concerned.

"Any other decision could not pass the Security Council," he said.

Lavrov was speaking during a visit to the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, after a
meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which
comprises China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

US assistant secretary of state for European affairs Daniel Fried said Sunday
that the US wanted to work with Russia on the Security Council to settle the
final status of Kosovo. He added the final outcome had to be independence.

But Russia insists that the final approval on the status of Kosovo should
remain with Serbia, which opposes independence for its province.

Kosovo has been administered by the UN since 1999, after a NATO bombing
campaign helped to drive out Serb forces carrying out a brutal crackdown on
ethnic Albanians, who make up 90 percent of Kosovo's population.
