UN Mission Condemns Serbia Over New Kosovo Office December 11, 2007 11:10 ET AFP
PRISTINA, Serbia (AFP)--The U.N. mission in Kosovo Tuesday condemned as illegal a decision by the Serbian government to open an office in a Serb-dominated part of the province. "UNMIK is of the opinion that this not in line with the legal framework in Kosovo," said UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker. The statement came after the Serbian government's ministry for Kosovo Monday opened an office in the Serb-populated northern half of the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica. http://www.serbianna.com/backgrounds/newsbox_gray/news_frame_object_top_left.gif http://www.serbianna.com/images/blank.gif http://www.serbianna.com/backgrounds/newsbox_gray/news_frame_object_top_right.gif http://www.serbianna.com/images/blank.gif Saudi Joint Relief Committee for Kosovo located in Kosovo is an umbrella group that includes Islamic organizations designated as terror groups. This particular office is located in the Kralja Petra Street in Kosovo capital Pristina, inside a Serbian factory Novi Dom who has been stripped of ownership of the building. http://www.serbianna.com/images/blank.gif http://www.serbianna.com/backgrounds/newsbox_gray/news_frame_object_bottom_le.gif http://www.serbianna.com/images/blank.gif http://www.serbianna.com/backgrounds/newsbox_gray/news_frame_object_bottom_ri.gif "This is a violation of 1244," Ruecker told journalists in the provincial capital Pristina. U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244 ended Kosovo's 1998-99 war and placed it under U.N. administration after the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ousted Serbian forces waging a brutal crackdown on ethnic Albanians. "We will now ask New York for guidance. We are informing our headquarters that we think this is not in line with the current framework and that this is illegal," said Ruecker. Kosovo leaders said Monday they would start immediate talks on independence with international partners, as a U.N. deadline ended for a negotiated settlement of the dispute between Belgrade and Pristina over Kosovo's future status. Serb-populated northern Kosovo could attempt to break away from the rest of the province or declare it wants to remain a part of Serbia in case of a unilateral declaration of independence by the province's ethnic Albanian leaders. The issue goes before the U.N. Security Council on Dec. 19. http://www.serbianna.com/news/2007/03067.shtml
