Misguided efforts against Serbs

By MICHAEL PRAVICA

Thank you for publishing professor Raju Thomas' Jan. 3 article, "The case
<http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/eo20080103a1.html> against Kosovo
independence." For over 60 years, Albanian extremists have sought to create an
ethnically and religiously "pure" Kosovo by ethnically cleansing and
slaughtering Kosovo's non-Albanian inhabitants and destroying non-Albanian
cultural monuments.

With Western aid, they have nearly succeeded in realizing their fascist dream
as hundreds of thousands of Serbians have been cleansed from Kosovo, thousands
have been murdered, and over 130 churches and monasteries (some more than 1,300
years old) have been destroyed.

Granting illegal independence to Kosovo will encourage terrorists the world
over that they can successfully alter the borders of sovereign nations by
force. Consider, for example, Turkey's recent war against the Kurds.

Granting Kosovo illegal independence will also hurt Serbia's fledgling
democracy and unravel the entire Balkans, as Albanian extremists have their
sights on Macedonia, Montenegro and even parts of Greece for their "Greater
Albania" project.

It's high time to cease Western misguided efforts against the Serbs. The
destructive consequences for international law and respect for sovereign
nations are incalculable and irreversible.

The opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are the writer's own and do
not necessarily reflect the policies of The Japan Times.
