A major security issue facing Europe in 2008 is the future of the Serbian
province of Kosovo. Many countries around the world, including several key
members of the European Union and NATO, are facing a dilemma: to follow
Washington's lead in recognizing Kosovo's likely UDI, or to uphold the rule
of law, the United Nations Charter, and the Westphalian principles that
still retain their validity. This issue has legal and political relevance -
not least for India - that transcends the boundaries of the former
Yugoslavia. The speakers will provide a diagnosis of the problem of Kosovo,
warn of the obvious and hidden dangers, and recommend workable, durable, and
legal solutions.
