Serbian Canadians protest Kosovo independence in weekend marches
11 minutes ago

TORONTO - Demonstrators chanting "Kosovo is Serbia" marched to the U.S.
consulate Saturday in the first of several Serbian Canadian protests planned
over the next couple of weeks.
About 350 protesters led by bicycle-mounted police proceeded from the
Ontario legislature grounds to the consulate just down University Avenue.
By time they arrived, the crowd had swollen to over 2,000 by a police
estimate. They were held to the west side of University Avenue, across the
street and well away from the consulate building, which was fronted by ranks
of police and cruisers.
After speeches from organizers, police allowed seven children through their
lines to place a placard in front of the consulate and light candles.
The protesters are upset over Kosovo's unilateral declaration of
independence from Serbia last weekend.
U.S. consulate officials have been in touch with the Mounties and Toronto
police about protecting the building, which they say is responsibility of
the RCMP.
No one is inside the consulate today, which is closed.
Similar events are planned Sunday in Vancouver and Montreal.
