Serbs bash separate Kosovo
March down streets of T.O. asking Canadian government not to recognize
independent state
Chanting "Kosovo is Serbia," protesters marched down University Ave.
yesterday to the United States consulate where five children lit candles to
commemorate Serbians who lost their lives in the Kosovo conflict.
The rally began two hours earlier at Queen's Park where around 700 people
gathered to demand the Canadian government not recognize the independence of
the Republic of Kosovo from Serbia.
"Like Quebec is part of Canada, like Taiwan is part of China and like
Kashmir is part of India, Kosovo is part of Serbia," said Bojan Ratkovic to
enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
Ratkovic, 20, is one of the organizers of Kosovo is Serbia. Started as a
small group of students, they now claim support from all across the
Serbian-Canadian community and other organizations, including the Jewish
Defence League and the Hindu Conference of Canada.
While the United States and a number of other countries quickly recognized
Kosovo as a nation when it declared its independence Feb. 17, the Canadian
government has yet to take a stance in the issue.
Scarborough-Agincourt MP Jim Karygiannis spoke at the rally and warned Prime
Minister Stephen Harper against providing any formal recognition of Kosovo.
Karygiannis plans to introduce a motion in the House of Commons this week
calling for a delay on any decision until the UN rules on the issue.
