More than 1,000 demonstrators rallied in Manhattan Sunday to blast Kosovo's
break from Serbia - and America's recognition of the newfound independence.

"America has raped Serbia," retired CUNY history Prof. Radmila Milentijevic
told the crowd.

"It has committed a crime against a sovereign country and a member of these
United Nations."

On Feb. 17, the Serbian province declared independence and was immediately
recognized by the United States, Germany and several other Western countries.

Firebrand speakers at yesterday's protest across from the United Nations linked
the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia to the "New World Order," and the Kosovo
Liberation Army to Al Qaeda. They compared Kosovo's place in Serbian history
with Jerusalem's importance to Jews.

Americans recall TV images from 1999 of ethnic Albanians piling onto trains to
escape ethnic cleansing, but many demonstrators called those images misleading
and incomplete.

"I'm not saying the Serbians were totally innocent," said Patrick Sevanovich,
47, who joined the group to march down Second Ave. and west to Times Square.
"But there was killing on both sides, and everyone was fleeing."

"Why are there no pictures of the 70 [Serb] churches that burned in Kosovo last
year?" asked his wife, Vannessa Sevanovich.

"My family had to flee [Kosovo] because of the bombing, and I can never go
back."
