Kosovo independence 'abnormal': Portuguese president
29 March 2008, 16:14 CET

(LISBON) - Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva on Saturday said
Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence was "abnormal" and called on
his country's government to consider any recognition carefully.

"The unilateral declaration of independence is something very abnormal,
there are no provisions for it in international law," he told Antena 1 radio
station.

"Given the abnormal situation and without forgetting that we have 300 men,
300 Portuguese, 300 soldiers in Kosovo, we must be very careful," he added.

While he would not make a final statement on the issue, Cavaco Silva said
that "when there is no perfect solution we must think and be careful to
choose the right one".

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates has said he will recognise Kosovo in
due course but only after consultations with his country's leaders and the
president.

Kosovo, a mainly ethnic Albanian province of Serbia which declared
independence last month, has been recognised by about 30 countries,
including 16 members of the European Union and the United States.

Serbia has recalled its ambassadors from countries that took the step.
