Dear Friends,

David Orchard will be in Edmonton next week to speak at a free, public forum
on Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, see notice below.

We hope you are able to attend this discussion on why the secession of
Kosovo matters to Canadians, what the U.S. backing for Kosovo's
"independence" has to do with that country's geopolitical interests — the
U.S. has a huge military base in Kosovo, Camp Bondsteel — and how this
superpower redrawing of a small, sovereign country's borders threatens the
system of carefully built up international law throwing the world back to a
time when might was right and big powers ruled the day. Furthermore, the
unilateral declaration of independence has serious implications for Canada
as well.

Best wishes,

Rose-Marie Larsson

>From the forum organizers' press release:

"The United Nations incorporated the principles of territorial integrity and
state sovereignty into the United Nations Charter. The Helsinki Final Act of
1975 reinforced the U.N. declaration by adding to them the principle of the
inviolability of borders. These are fundamental principles with universal
application. They cannot be set aside because of special cases or because
they present an obstacle to the policy objectives of economically powerful
nations."
