Kosovo recognition "hasty" says Schroeder

BELGRADE -- Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder says that EU
member-states have been too quick in recognizing Kosovo's unilateral
independence.

Schroeder said that he hoped that the EU would realize its responsibility
for leaving Serbia's pro-European forces out on a limb.

"That's why I hope that they will realize by April 28, particularly Holland,
how important it is to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement
(SAA), and take a concrete step towards scrapping visas for Serbian
citizens," he told daily Blic.

The former chancellor, who is in Belgrade for the 175th anniversary of the
establishment of the Swiss media group Ringier that owns Blic, said that as
far as Kosovo was concerned, he would personally have preferred a different
decision to have been taken, though there was not much sense in looking
backwards.

He told European leaders that it would not be good for the stability of the
whole region if the SAA was not signed with Serbia.

"I am really in favor of bolstering the pro-European forces in Serbia for
Serbia to become a part of Europe," said Schroeder
