Refugees flee the 1998-1999 Kosovo conflict

25 April 2008 Pristina _ The unresolved issue of missing persons in Kosovo
could undermine stability, the International Commission on Missing Persons,
ICMP, warns.

To ensure that the question of what happened to persons who went missing
during the conflict in 1999 between Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians and Serb
military forces does not cause further instability in Kosovo, the ICMP
called for closer cooperation on the issue between Belgrade and Pristina.

“It is important to identify more grave sites that have links to the
conflict,” the ICMP said.

The 1998-99 conflict in Kosovo left thousands of persons missing; currently
there are around 2000 whose fate remains unknown.

Talks between Kosovo and Serbia aimed at shedding light on the issue resumed
this week in Belgrade.

The ICMP notes that “solving the issue of missing persons is of crucial
importance, not only because families want to know where their loved ones
are but also for the peace and stability of the region.”
