US dismisses call by RIC for talks between Serbia and
Kosovo

NEW YORK - The United States has dismissed the call by
foreign ministers of India, Russia and China for
resumption of talks between the leaders of Serbia and
Kosovo on the status of the breakaway state, saying
that it has no merit.

Replying to a question, State Department spokesman
Sean McCormack said that the status of Kosovo has
already been resolved and it is an independent state
now.

India, Russia and China do not recognise the
unilateral declaration of Kosovo for independence from
Serbia.

"Russia, India and China favour the resumption of
talks between Belgrade and Pristina to reach a
consensus between them on all problems relating to
this Serb territory.

"We believe the Kosovo problem should be resolved
exclusively on the basis of international law,"
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after the
meeting with foreign ministers of India and China in
Yekaterinburg on Thursday.

China, India, Russia urge renewed Kosovo talks

YEKATERINBURG, Russia - China, India and Russia's
foreign ministers called on Thursday for a renewal of
talks between Serbia's leaders and Kosovo on the
status of the disputed territory.

‘Russia, India and China call for the renewal of talks
between Belgrade and Pristina within the framework of
international law and for agreement between them on
all problems related to this Serbian province,’
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in
comments carried on national television.

Lavrov was speaking alongside his Chinese and Indian
counterparts, who gathered in the Siberian city of
Yekaterinburg for a meeting on Friday of foreign
ministers of the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia,
India and China.

Lavrov stressed that the Kosovo dispute should be
resolved ‘exclusively on the basis of international
law.’

Russia has led international opposition to Kosovo's
independence declaration in February, which has been
recognised by most Western countries.

The BRIC group is an informal entity so called because
the four countries are regarded as up-and-coming
economic heavyweights that could rival more
long-established economies.
