Russia worried, wants new talks

MOSCOW - Russian Deputy FM Aleksandr Grushko on
Tuesday in Moscow voiced his country's concern over
the situation in Kosovo.

The diplomat stressed that the movement to destablize
the situation could be stopped if negotiations between
Belgrade and Priština were renewed.

Another condition for the stabilization of the
situation, Grushko said, was for activities outside
beyond UN Security Council Resolution 1244 to stop.

Stressing that there were differences on the Kosovo
issue between Russia and some EU countries, the
Russian diplomat said that Moscow realized that the
European Union was prepared to take additional
responsibility in the region.

"We do not oppose this, but any moves aimed at
changing the format of international presence or
introducing the EU influence through other mechanisms
would have to be coordinated with Belgrade and
approved by the UN Security Council," Grushko said.

He announced that one of the topics at the regular
semi-annual Russian-EU summit in Khanty-Masiysk on
June 26-27 would be frozen conflicts such as
Pridnyestrovye [Transdniester], Kosovo and Cyprus.
