Russia Wants Intl Court to Assess Situation in Kosovo
- Lavrov
-"[I]f you ask me whether I am an optimist, I will say
that I have lot more optimism now that we have secured
Russia's firm support."
MOSCOW - Russia will back Serbia's request that the UN
General Assembly provide it with the International
Court of Justice's consultative opinion on the
situation in Kosovo.
"We will definitely back Serbia's request to the UN
General Assembly to be provided with the International
Court of Justice's consultative opinion on what is
happening in Kosovo," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov said after talks with Serbian Foreign Minister
Vuk Jeremic on Thursday.
"I am convinced that it is the inalienable right of
any state to be provided with the opinion of the
world's highest court. Those who resist this only
demonstrate that they are using unlawful methods. This
issue was discussed on Thursday," Lavrov said.
"Some countries will strongly resists this
initiative," Jeremic said.
"But if you ask me whether I am an optimist, I will
say that I have lot more optimism now that we have
secured Russia's firm support," he said.
"This does not mean that countries will have to vote
for or against the Serbian position. We are just
asking for the World Court's opinion. I cannot think
of any arguments against voting for this issue,"
Jeremic said.
