Kosovo Serbs condemn State Dept. views

-The deputy speaker said that Russia and China were
also members of the international community, and that
they had completely opposing positions on Kosovo to
that of Fried.

BELGRADE - A senior Kosovo Serb has dismissed U.S.
calls for the international community to take control
over northern Kosovo.

"I think this is a scandalous statement, the goal of
which is to push the northern part of Kosovo into an
independent Kosovo," Deputy Speaker of the Kosovo Serb
assembly Marko Jaksic told Beta in response to remarks
from senior U.S. State Department official Daniel
Fried yesterday.

He added that "they don't care about control by the
international community, but that of the 'Shiptars'
(Kosovo Albanians) in Pristina."

Jaksic pointed out that Serbian state institutions in
the north of the province were functioning "much
better than the institutions of the independent state
of Kosovo that Fried has created".

The deputy speaker said that Russia and China were
also members of the international community, and that
they had completely opposing positions on Kosovo to
that of Fried.

The U.S. under secretary of state for European affairs
said yesterday that Washington wanted the
international community to reassume control in the
north of the province, where Serbs make up the
majority of the population.

"Northern Kosovo is now beyond the law. Some sort of
presence of the international community should exist
in that region, and it cannot be exempt from control,
or be outside Kosovo," Fried said.
