Karadzic bus tour becomes tourist hit

Radovan Karadzic has only been behind bars for two weeks, and already
Serbian merchandisers and tour operators are cashing in on his infamy.
Visitors to Belgrade can now take the Karadzic Tour and visit the war crimes
suspect’s favourite city haunts.

The tour begins on the street that Karadzic lived and worked as a faith
leader under the assumed identity of Dr Dragan Dabic. Graffiti on the walls
now proclaims it ‘Radovan Karadzic Street’.

After a stop in his local bakery to try his favourite home-made potato pie,
it’s off to see his supermarket and to take a stroll around the
neighbourhood.

Following the route of the number 73 bus line - the bus on which he was
finally seized and arrested – the tour arrives at the Pinocchio pancake
shop. On the menu now is the Karadzic Pancake, the former Bosnian Serb
leader’s favourite treat, with Nutella, cream and nuts inside.

The excursion winds up where Karadzic liked to wind down. At Crazy House,
the neighbourhood pub, tourists can try a glass of the long-time patron’s
favourite tipple – red wine.

Locals joke that sitting among the regulars could be Ratko Mladic -
Karadzic’s military commander who is still at large.

“We are now the most famous bar in new Belgrade. He had good taste,” said
the publican.

But not everyone thinks the Karadzic tour is a good idea. RT’s correspondent
spoke to a couple of British tourists on a backpacking tour of Eastern
Europe who told her that following in the footsteps of the Hague’s most
famous resident was not on their agenda.

“I think it’s bad taste. I think if it’s aimed towards tourists, they’re
probably not aware of the opinion of outside tourists,” said one of the
young women.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the Karadzic phenomenon. Even if you don’t go on
the tour, stalls are covered with memorabilia of the divisive figure. His
image adorns CDs and videos, and a popular Serbian souvenir has become a
Karadzic t-shirt.
