(RosBusinessConsulting via COMTEX) -- ORCI| Quote| Chart| News|
PowerRating-- Most Russians (70 percent) do not know what caused the NATO
bombing of Yugoslavia, a poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion
Research Center (VCIOM) showed. Less than one tenth of respondents (8
percent) said that the United States' aggression was the reason behind the
bombing, while 6 percent attributed this operation to NATO and the United
States' ambitions to open military bases and station troops in Yugoslavia.
Among other reasons mentioned was the civil war between the Albanians and
the Serbs, the struggle for zones of influence in the Balkans, and the
desire to split Yugoslavia's territory (each answer was chosen by 4 percent
of respondents). According to VCIOM data, 36 percent said that the bombing
was initiated by NATO, while 31 percent maintained that the United States
started it. Meanwhile, 57
percent of respondents were confident that NATO's primary objective in the
conflict was to move troops into Yugoslavia and open military bases there,
while merely 7 percent said that NATO's actions were aimed at stopping
bloodshed and the persecution of Albanians in Kosovo. The poll was conducted
among 1,600 people in 140 locations throughout 42 republics and regions of
Russia on March 14-15.
