Jeremic: Serbian monasteries in Kosmet must not become pawns

21 April 2009

Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić called on UNESCO and the
international community to help in the protection and preservation of
the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosmet and prevent the issue from being
misused for political purposes. Serbian monastiers must never become
pawns in the perilous identity creation game, he said before the UNESCO
Organization Board, commening on the attempts of Pristina to
misrepresent the Serbian cultural heritage as that of Kosovo Albanians.

Such an attempt to rewrite history must be condemned most severely,
Jeremic pointed out and added that the international community and
UNESCO must not stay passive. Stating that the preservation of the
threatened Serbian cultural heritage in Kosmet is Serbia’s national
priority, he emphasized the importance of that battle and its universal
meaning in the context of the threat caused by the unilaterally
proclaimed independence of Kosmet. He pointed to an attempt of
postponing the decision of the World Heritage Committee on medieval
monuments in Kosmet due to pressure to artifically separate that part of
the Serbian heritage from others and thanked UNESCO for preventing the
attempt at politicizing cultural heritage.

He also emphasized that in the past 10 years Kosovo Albanian extremists
destroyed or damaged more than 150 Serbian churches and monasteries in
Kosmet, but reiterated Serbs want reconciliation, compromise and life in
peace.
