A man of Bosnian origin is to go on trial in Sweden for war crimes allegedly
committed in Bosnia Herzegovina during the war in the former Yugoslavia, the
public prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.

"The crimes took place in the south of Bosnia Herzegovina near to the river
Neretva, which served as a line of demarcation between the Croat and Serb
forces," a statement said.

The accused, 43, whose name was not given, was a "guard at the Dretelj camp,
where a large number of Bosnian Serbian civilians were detained."

The Metro daily named him as Ahmet Makitan and said he took Swedish
nationality in 2006.

He is accused of "submitting detainees at the camp to torture, to inhuman
treatment" between May and August 1992.

The public prosecutor's office said the trial could last several months due
to the large number of alleged crimes and victims. The trial is due to open
on October 13.
