Members of Serbia Army shall join international forces as of next year in fight
against pirates in Somalia. That shall be the first active and independent army
operation of the EU naval forces ‘Atalanta’ with participation of the Serbia
Army.

The EU anti-pirates mission has been going on for two years already. Serbia
Army has been given recognition for participation in the mission very important
for the EU. Other contingents are from Holland, Spain, Germany, France, Greece,
Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Luxembourg. The area being controlled covers five
million square kilometers, approximately area of the whole EU. The operation
involves participation of about 1,800 soldiers and more than 20 ships and
planes. Our soldiers shall probably serve on ships of either France or Greece.

The importance of this mission along Somalia coast is best reflected in the
fact that about four million people depend on help whose shipment is secured by
the EU armies. As ‘Blic’ learns Brussels also intends to offer Serbia
participation in mission of training of Somali forces. This mission also has
its civilian part what understands participation of our military doctors.
